DEBBIE LERMAN — HIS BODY/MY GAZE
I started photographing my naked husband when we discovered a surprisingly stark imbalance between female nudes, made by famous male photographers (countless), and male nudes made by well-known women (almost none). The project has taken on added meaning and urgency in this #MeToo moment, as we search for new ways to define, depict and express masculinity, that do not involve stereotypical male dominance and aggression. One way, I believe, is to direct our gaze at a primary source of men’s power and their vulnerability: the male body.
